What's The Matter with TEN?
Editorial ReviewNot even Good News Week is bringing viewers back to TEN.
Editorial Review
Channel TEN viewers appear to be snubbing the network with an extraordinary downturn in audiences for some of its key programs. After a humiliating weekly loss to the ABC just over a week ago it continues to chalk up a number of weeknight losses behind the public broadcaster, too.
Last week it landed behind the ABC on three occasions: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
On Monday this week it slumped to a dreadful 16.8% share, again defeated by ABC. On the night it returned Good News Week (756,000) to its line-up it didn't manage to get one program in the nightly top 20. In fact its best show for the night was Neighbours on 811,000.
Australian Idol's verdict show was a paltry 783,000. At least the Sunday edition managed a healthier 1.19m, nudging past Dancing with the Stars ' 1.16m.
But its re-vamped verdict show suffers from several problems. One is its perennial issue of being a padded out show with only 10 minutes of 'news'. This year there is no group song, instead forcing viewers to sit through the three worst performing numbers all over again. Great idea. And with the introduction of Daylight Saving, there are now only three states that see the show live to air: New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. That's a problem when you are trying to get viewers to watch and vote.
Supernatural took 659,000 on Monday, about the same as 90210 managed before it was dropped from schedule and relegated to summer. Even Friends' 597,000 is a long way behind Home & Away and Two and a Half Men.
In demographics TEN was third in 18-49 on Monday and second in 26-39.
The low figures reflect poor returns for the new season of House, which considering it is fastracked and a popular brand is something of a complete mystery.
TEN really needs to ask itself if it has upset its viewers by dropping shows or whether its younger audience is distracted by downloads and other entertainment services.
Or both.

Claire Houston: I couldn't agree more - Channel 10 has absolutely the most junky shows on air. I rarely, rarely watch anything on channel 10. They need to scrap a good 80% of what they currently have on air and find some fresh, intelligent shows. I must say though that at present, and for some months now, channels 7 and 9 have not been far behind 10 when it comes to lousy choice on offer. The entire night's viewing, every night, is cop shows, CSI, murder investigations. Boring. Boring. Where is Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Richard Attenborough, now Boston Legal is off air as well. ABC is the ONLY option these days. (15 October 2008)
