Kath & Kim US

Editorial Review

Take comfort in the fact that rip-offs often pale in comparison to the original.

Editorial Review

Most Australians were sceptical when news broke that the Americans were set to rip-off our beloved bogan mother-and-daughter team. Now it's time to judge how they've done.

The American Kath & Kim chronicles the misadventures of mother Kath Day (Molly Shannon) and daughter Kim Day-Fattinbene (Selma Blair) as they live their dysfunctional lives in a suburban community of Florida.

The opener saw Kim move back home, while this instalment sees an anxious Kath anticipating her wedding to Carl (John Michael Higgins). Insecurities set in when Kim comments that she's too old to be getting married. Kath begins to doubt the marriage, only to later stumble upon Carl in an uncompromising situation. Meanwhile, Kim is suspicious that Craig (Mikey Day), her estranged husband, is having an affair.

No one - let alone the original show's creators and stars, Jane Turner and Gina Riley - could have envisaged a future American version from Kath & Kim's humble beginnings. Now the franchise is global, and there's no telling where it could end up next.

The Americans look to have made a decent go of it, but, call it patriotism or even bigotry, there's a certain satisfaction in knowing nothing will ever come close to the original.

Kath & Kim US airs on the Seven Network on Sunday, October 19, at 7pm.
